Shade tree sale

The City of Northfield will be accepting orders for trees for the annual Shade Tree Program from April 1 - 30, 2021. The quantity of trees available will be limited so orders will be taken on a first-come-first-served basis. The trees available for sale are listed on the order form. 

Ordering and paying

Must be a Northfield resident. Residents can order the trees by completing the order form.

Staff will call or email you to pick up planting stake after order your is confirmed.

Planting

Planting is planned for May 22, 9 a.m. to lunch. 

Donating a tree

If you would like to donate a tree to a city park instead of planting on your own property, contact us.

Volunteering to plant trees

If you would like to help plant trees, please send the interest form. Neighbors (formerly Men of Northfield) is organizing the volunteers and will have more details about the day. Lunch will be provided.

A member of the Neighbors group will be in touch with additional details about the volunteer planting day on May 22. Expressing interest in learning more is not a commitment to attend.

River Birch Clump

  • Fast growing
  • It is called a clump tree because it can have one or multiple trunks 
  • Yellow leaves in the fall, and its bark peels

  • Grows up to 50 to 70 feet tall and 25 to 50 feet wide
  • Can grow in partial shade or shady areas, and benefits from wetter soil (you may need to continue to water around the tree to help growth)
  • Also referred to as Canoe Birch, it is known for the white, papery birch bark with black stripes on it

Yellowwood

  • Grows up to 30 to 50 feet tall and 40 to 55 feet wide
  • The average lifespan of this tree is less than 100 years
  • The branches and leaves crown out over the trunk of the tree, making it a good shade tree
  • The tree blooms every 2 or 3 years with white clustering flowers as shown on the left
  • The flower clusters are roughly just over a foot long and drape from the branches
  • In the fall its leaves turn a bright yellow

  • Grows up to 20 to 30 feet tall and 25 to 35 feet wide
  • Generally used as an ornamental or decorative tree with its heart shaped leaves
  • Grows an umbrella like canopy of reddish-pink buds that bloom in the spring
  • Grows well in partial sunlight and in different types of soil
  • Does not tolerate road salts well, if possible, plant closer to your house

Northern Pin Oak

  • Grows up to 50 to 70 feet tall and 40 to 60 feet wide
  • A medium shade tree, and also can be used as a street tree
  • Prefers moist soils and grows in full to partial sun
  • Leaves turn a russet red color in the fall
  • Fruit that it produces are acorns
  • Acorns are produced every two seasons

  • Grows in a rounded shape
  • Is well-adapted to low-lying areas with poor drainage

Blue Beech

  • A relatively slow growing tree that is native to Minnesota
  • The trunk is relatively skinnier than most, and can be twisted
