Temporary Expansions and Licenses
Issuing licenses in Northfield
The City of Northfield Clerk’s office, along with the Police Department, issues and enforces several licenses required by the city. The City of Northfield does not require general business licenses for most businesses, but does license certain business activities. Licenses required are listed below. Please allow a minimum of 45 days for processing most licenses.
Temporary expansion of outdoor dining area
Limited outdoor service is now allowed.
Interested restaurant and dining establishments must complete an application to extend their service area onto City owned property or right of way. The application must be reviewed and approved by the City before the expansion takes place.

Charitable Gambling License
A charitable gambling license requires City and Minnesota Gambling Control Board approval. The fee for a license is $15 per application and $30 for premises permits. Applications can be obtained through the Minnesota Gambling Control Board.
Concessions License
A concessions/miscellaneous license is required for the temporary sale of food and beverages on city property. Must be approved by the City Council (this excludes Defeat of Jesse James Days concessions). The fee for a license is $100 per application. Fireworks Retail Sales License
A fireworks sale license is required for the sale of legal fireworks with or without other merchandise. The license fee is $100 for sale with other merchandise, and $250 for fireworks only. Additional information can be found in the Northfield City Code and State Statutes. Complete and submit the following documents:
Liquor Licenses
The City of Northfield provides liquor licenses for the types of liquor listed below. View the Liquor License for details on each license and required documents.

Refuse License
A refuse license is required for transporting garbage or refuse for hire. Must be approved by the City Council. Additional information can be found in the Northfield City Code. Complete and return the following documents:

- Certificate of Compliance Workers’ Compensation
- Tax information form
- List of vehicles
Vehicle for Hire License
A vehicle for hire license is required for the conveyance of a passenger for hire upon any street or other public place of the city. Approval by the City Council. Additional information can be found in the Northfield City Code. Complete and return the following documents:

Tobacco License
A tobacco license is required for the retail sale of tobacco. Vending machines are not allowed. Approval by City Council. Additional information can be found in the Northfield City Code. Complete and return the following documents:
