Who can apply?

You must live within the city limits of Northfield. If you live outside the city limits, you must apply at the county sheriff’s office.

Background checks

The police department will conduct a series of background-related checks to assure you meet eligibility requirements established in state law.

How long is a permit valid?

A one-year permit to purchase a handgun in Minnesota is issued upon review and approval of application.

Submitting applications

Completed forms must be turned in at the Police Department in person with a current valid ID.

Submitting applications during the COVID-19 restrictions

Applications may be submitted to the Police Department through the mail or by email. Applications must be signed and include a copy of your driver’s license.

Processing time

Due to limited resources during this time, there may be delays in processing applications.

Picking up permits

Permits will need to be picked up in person once they are issued in order to verify identity. We will contact you when your permit is approved and ready to be picked up. Please be sure to include a current phone on your application. You will need to present your MN driver’s license at the time of pick up.
