Rental Housing Board of Appeals
The City of Northfield Rental Housing Board of Appeals hears and decides appeals of orders, decisions, or determinations made by the building official relative to the application and interpretation of the Rental code. The Board shall also hear petitions for variances as allowed by the Rental code.
An application for appeal shall be based on a claim that the true intent of the Rental code or the rules legally adopted have been incorrectly interpreted, the provisions of this code do not fully apply, or an equally good or better form of compliance is proposed. Appeals will not be heard that argue the literal understanding of a provision. The board shall have no authority to waive requirements of the Rental code. All decisions made by the Board are final.
The Rental Housing Board of Appeals shall consist of five voting members and non-voting advisory members, such as the fire chief, appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. Members serve three-year terms. There is no term limit. Members do not receive monetary compensation. The building official serves as an ex-officio member.
Applications for membership on the Rental Housing Board of Appeals are available by contacting the City of Northfield City Clerk at City Hall, 801 Washington Street.
Appeal hearings, when requested, will be held on a Thursday at 7:00 p.m., if at all possible. However, in the event of a conflict on a Thursday, hearings will be scheduled to meet the requirements of the ordinance.

Application and Membership Requirements
The Mayor recommends applicants to the City Council based on their interest in the administration of the Rental code, willingness to serve and background. The board of appeals shall consist of members who are qualified by experience and training to review matters pertaining to building construction and Rental code issues and are not employees of the City of Northfield.Applications for membership on the Rental Housing Board of Appeals are available by contacting the City of Northfield City Clerk at City Hall, 801 Washington Street.
Meetings
