Grace Whittier Fund Committee

The Grace Whittier Fund Committee was created in 1988 as a result of a gift from long-time Northfield resident Grace Whittier. The purpose of the fund is to support recreational opportunities for Northfield youth. The City of Northfield has established a process to award grants from the Grace Whittier Fund to Northfield area organizations that provide recreational activities for youth and children.

Returns from the City's investments have been low for the last several years. The City is looking carefully at a process for transferring the Grace Whittier fund to a non-profit foundation for investment and granting purposes. The idea would be that with more options for investment (the City's options are very limited), the foundation could get much greater returns. Although it means no grants in 2011, this change should result in a more robust Grace Whittier Fund, meaning more and larger grants could be given out.

The committee may reconsider the decision to have a grant process this year. If so, the process would be advertised broadly and staff would contact all the organizations that if submitted grant applications in the past.

The committee reviews grants and issues funds to various youth groups and organizations. The committee consists of five members, appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. Each member serves a three-year term. There is no term limit. Members do not receive monetary compensation.
