Arts & Culture Commission
The Arts and Culture Commission advises the City Council on the development of arts and cultural activities, organizations and facilities in Northfield. Its purpose is to assist Northfield in becoming a community in which arts and cultural activities:
In September 2009, the Arts and Culture released its Report to City Council, which serves to update council as to the group's progress, challenges and opportunities, as well as provide recommendations for Council consideration.
The Arts and Culture Commission consists of nine voting members. Each member serves a three-year term. Terms are staggered for continuity. There is a consecutive two-term limit. Members do not receive compensation.
Northfield Living Treasures Award Program
This annual award presented by the Northfield Arts and Culture Commission honors those individuals and groups who have, over a period of time, made significant contributions to Northfield in, through, or on behalf of arts and culture, so as to enhance the reputation of the city and the quality of life of its citizens. Application and Membership Requirements
Members are appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council. Members, based on their willingness to serve and background, are appointed from various sectors of the community such as: Arts and cultural organizations, Carleton and St. Olaf Colleges, Local schools, Business community, Independent artists, and the Community at large.
Applications for the Arts and Culture Commission are available by contacting the City of Northfield at City Hall, 801 Washington Street, or online.
Meetings
Meetings are scheduled on the second Monday of the month and as called by the Chair. For transaction of business at any meeting, a majority of members shall constitute a quorum. It is desired that members make every attempt to be present at all meetings.
The public is invited to attend meetings as observers and, at the discretion of the Commission, to address items on the published agenda when so invited.
- Are recognized as vital components of community life that are worthy of investment and support from the public, private and non-profit sectors;
- Are valued and promoted for their economic benefits and development potential, especially in the downtown;
- Include new ethnic groups in Northfield's identity and sense of community;
- Represent an integral part of Northfield's educational mission and programs for young people;
- Engage the talents and involvement of retirees and senior citizens;
- Develop a wider array of opportunities for collaboration between faculty and student artists at the two colleges and coummunity artists;
- Cooperate to enhance the public perception of Northfield's identity and quality of life in the community itself, the surrounding region and beyond.
