Engineering is responsible for managing all infrastructure construction projects, including those associated with private development projects. The division prepares feasibility studies, conducts meetings with affected property owners and calculates special assessments. Engineering staff review infrastructure construction plans, enforce specifications and inspect street and utility construction performed by outside contractors.

Future Street Projects

The City of Northfield approves a Capital Investment Plan (CIP) each year that specifies the major street reconstruction projects to undertaken over the next five years. Included in this plan are the street reconstruction projects. The CIP is a plan and is subject to changes over time due to budget adjustments or changes in the priorities of the infrastructure projects.

Street Closures

During the construction season, the Engineering division may deem it necessary to close portions of some city streets to perform construction and maintenance work. Every effort is made to reroute traffic in a logical and efficient manner. Upcoming street construction projects involving closures will be posted on the city’s web site and announced in the local media. The division tries to maintain a sufficient surface for driving to and from private homes; trenches are not left open overnight or over weekends.

Information for Contractors & Consultants Interested in City Construction Projects

The City of Northfield uses the OneOffice and eGram project management software systems. Starting in October 2010 all city construction project advertisements, bid documents, and bid results are posted to the city's eGram website. Contractors and consultants interested in city construction projects should use the website to obtain the most up to date information about projects up for bid. Hard copies of plans may still be purchased from the city's Engineering Department.

All bid documents are available to the public through the eGram website except for the plan documents. Plans and sepcifications in digital format can be downloaded for free by registering for an eGram account with the city. Contractors must notify the city each time they want to be added to a project plan holder list and gain access to digital plans on the eGram site.
