About

Northfield, Minnesota, is a vibrant, 19th-century river town with a blend of stunning characteristics and opportunities. Just 35 miles south of the Twin Cities metropolitan area, Northfield boasts a growing residential base, a thriving business community, two nationally-recognized colleges and many active and involved citizens.

Northfield was founded in 1855 on the banks of the Cannon River as a mill town. Its founder, John W. North, built a dam, a sawmill for lumber and a gristmill for flour. On September 7, 1876, the infamous Jesse James and his gang rode into town to rob the First National Bank. The raid was thwarted by the brave townspeople, an event that is celebrated every year in Northfield during the Defeat of Jesse James celebration.

Today, there are many reasons to visit, make a home or develop a business in Northfield – it’s people, location and overall atmosphere are like no other. To find out more about Northfield, contact the City of Northfield’s Administration Department.
